When you were little did you dream of big things that you were going to do when you grew up? What were those dreams? How many of them are you living out now? Ever since I can remember I wanted to run my own business. I would sit on the stairs in my house, with a puzzle book and pretend that I was booking in people to work with. I think for some reason my business was a travel agency, but that’s about as much as I can remember on the actual business. I can remember circling words on the page which was booking people in to travel to exotic locations!
There’s a quote I love in Lewis Caroll’s book, Alice in Wonderland;
“Cat: Where are you going?
Alice: Which way should I go?
Cat: That depends on where you are going.
Alice: I don’t know.
Cat: Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.”
If you don’t know where you’re going then any direction will take you there. You really do need to know where you’re heading when you’re running your own business. This stage of the process is all about getting into the nitty gritty of what you really want for your business. If you know that then it’s so much easier to know what steps you need to put into place to get there.
Spend some time getting into how you want to feel in your business and about your business. (Think 6-12 months, 1 year, 3 years, 5 years and beyond)
- What does your typical day look like?
- What will you be/do/have when you have achieved your vision?
- If an article was written about you in a magazine what would they be saying?
- What types of clients do you want calling you? (describe what they’re like)
- What transformation do you want your clients to achieve?
- What will be the benefit for you in building a thriving practice – physically, mentally, emotionally, financially?
- What do you want your business values to be?
- Where will you work? (Include where you might meet your clients for 121 etc)
- Will it be from the local café, from home or perhaps from a laptop on the beach, while sipping cocktails (you might chat with them on Skype for example)
- What will a typical week be like?
- How do you feel now that your vision has unfolded and come to fruition?
When you run your own business you hit challenges. This isn’t being negative, it’s being real. When you have a vision it can be your driving force to keep going, to keep working towards all that you have dreamed of. Not to be held back by anything. Having a vision can be really powerful.
Now remember not everyone will share your vision. That doesn’t mean it’s not possible.
Don’t let people put you off your vision – in fact I would share it with as few people as possible – that way they can’t make you believe you’re dreaming too big or that it’s not possible – be a visionary!
Stick to your path whether others believe it’s the right one or not. Surround yourself with the right people, people that will support and encourage your dreams. You may find out they believe you more than you believe yourself!
In one of my recent newsletters from Daily Truth, the Brave Girls were talking about the type of glasses that you put on when you first get out of bed. They talked about viewing the world through yucky glasses or choosing positive ones. Personally, I think you should choose fabulous glasses every single time. Make your vision as fabulous as it can possibly be too, but then don’t stop there. Turn it into a workable plan, with action steps and dates, some accountability and before you know it your vision/dreams will become a reality.
Your call to action this week is to carve out some ‘me’ time, grab a pen and paper (or create a vision board if you prefer) and compile your vision (make it a wish list of all you desire).
Go back to your dreams as a child, you never know what nuggets you might come across that will help you with your vision.
Don’t stop there though. Create your workable plan, build in action steps and dates, a sprinkling of accountability and ta-da your vision/dreams will become a reality.
