Life is about the journey, not the destination.
How many times have we heard that phrase, but yet we still rush to the next thing and the next thing, not appreciating all that is in the now?
I was walking my little dog a few weeks ago in an urban area and for some reason that day I noticed all of the road signs and road markings. It got me thinking about how these signs/markings can relate to life and can help us ask a few questions…
- Single/double yellow lines – sometimes life just flows. Everything is easy, it’s all just going along in a straight line. Sometimes with support (double yellow) and sometimes we are standing powerfully in our own strength (single yellow) Which one is right for you at this time?
- Zig zags – sometimes life far from flows! The reality of life. Yes we can all aspire to our dreams of how the future may be, but the reality is life isn’t always straightforward. Sometimes we are thrown challenges that we need to overcome. It’s then about how we react to those challenges. Will you choose to face them and see them as an opportunity for growth, or will you bemoan everything that is happening?
- Speed signs – these can be a useful reminder of how fast we are going in life – Do you need to speed up or slow down?
- Speed bumps – these can be a reminder that life can be a bumpy ride, but there are also those times when the road is flat and smooth. Knowing this can really help us to know our bumpy time won’t be permanent. Who can support you through your bumpy stages? What strategies can you put in place to build your resilience when these times come up?
- Zebra/Pelican crossings – life isn’t always black and white like the markings on the road. Sometimes we have to realise that there can be a different way of looking at things. If we can recognise this we can understand other people and ourselves much better. What will your perspective be?
- Signposts – we may see the signposts but sometimes we take a little detour. It’s ok to take the scenic route. We may not have signposts. What signposts or milestones do you have in your life? They can be set to encourage, motivate and inspire you, but when you achieve them you need to stop and celebrate, not just rush onto the next new thing. What do you need to celebrate?
- U-Turn – sometimes we may need to make a complete U-Turn and that’s ok too. Life is about learning, just because one decision was the right thing that one day doesn’t mean it has to stay the right thing for the rest of your life. U-Turns are a good thing – they can open us up to whole new directions, people and circumstances. What U-Turn would really make a difference in your life?
- ‘The Green Man’ – for those of you old enough you may remember the ‘Green Cross Code’ If you do then you will recall that the message was ‘Stop – Look – Listen’. Where do you need to stop, look and listen? Sometimes we are so busy ‘doing’ in our lives that we don’t take a moment to stop and reflect on what’s working and what’s not.
