You’re checking your SEO, adding keywords, posting at certain times of the day on social media with lots of different strategies at different times. You’re adding yet more webinars to your list and what about those 20 challenges that you keep kicking yourself for not starting or starting but then running out of time or energy to complete them? You’ve got Facebook groups coming out of your ears and need a lie down every time you open your inbox and see all of the newsletters you’ve signed up to.

Firstly, give yourself a break! Building a business takes time. You don’t have to build Rome in a day as they say (whoever’they’ are!) One of my favourite phrases/quotes is, Remember you’re exactly where you need to be right now’. If you know who it’s by please pop by and tell me, I like to quote the source. Anyway, take your foot off the accelerator – enjoy the journey of growing your business.

Remember, what’s right for one person in business isn’t right for another

Yes, there are tried and tested methods out there but that doesn’t mean they will all work for you.

Is it time for you to stop the world and get off for a while? Time to get back to the real reasons as to why you’re running your own business and why it’s important to you?

Deep down we usually know what is right for us, the direction we want to head in

Sometimes fear, uncertainty and doubt stand in our way. What does your gut tell you about what you should / shouldn’t do?

When I work with clients they regularly ask, ‘What do you think?’

It’s not about what I think, it’s about what’s right for you. Yes, I can switch into mentoring mode and help brainstorm a few ideas but ultimately it’s got to work for you. Listen to the advice, take on board all of the guidance that people are offering and then make it your own.

It doesn’t matter how many books you read, how many webinars you sign up to, how many challenges you join in on – the facts remain the same – you need to figure out the best way for you to build your business – so that it’s one you love, one you want to jump out of bed for and one that lights you up.

So many times I hear my clients say, I’ve done everything I should be doing and it’s still not working. Often it’s something we haven’t seen, we’ve gone through the blueprint and that’s got us to a certain point. Now it’s time to move to the next step. I’ve been there myself, out there on social media, engaging with my clients, doing blog posts, newsletters and all of it. It wasn’t working.

What really works for me is something that fits in with my own core values – connection. When I connect I work with more clients – simple as that. Yes, I have all of the business building things going in the background – the networking, the marketing etc, but ultimately when I go back to what works for me it’s all about CONNECTION. It took me a while to figure that out. Now that I have things are easier.

Explore your values

  • What is it that you need to be you?
  • What are your top core values? How do they relate to what you are doing or want to do in business.
  •  If you had to describe who you are, what you do and how you help in 3 sentences what would you say?
  • What’s unique about you?
  • What does/would make you stand out from the crowd?

Bring some of your values into your business

They will help you to make decisions and act as a guide in all that you do. Listen to what others tell you should do by all means, but then stop the world and think about what you want to do, what you desire to do and you’ll probably find you come up with a much better solution than anyone can give you in a book or blog post.

I’d love to know your thoughts, share in the comments below.

Your Best Self

Your ‘Best Self’ .. What does that mean?

We have days where it’s as though we’ve had a glass of some super-power juice; We’re on fire, in the flow, batting off any negatives that life throws us and seem to be able to juggle twenty things at once while sipping a cappuccino! Then there are those days when even just to raise a smile seems like far too much hard work.

When I’m working on this with my clients I sometimes ask them what’s happening when they are feeling that great, life is  fab and they are in the zone. This is the kind of thing they say..

  • ‘I’m looking after myself’, ‘I’m having some ‘me’ time’
  • ‘Eating healthily, being more active’
  • ‘Feeling more confident’
  • ‘I have self-belief’
  • ‘I’m in a job I love doing’
  • ‘I look in the mirror and like what I see’
  • ‘I am pushing myself to achieve the next great challenge’
  • ‘Im taking responsibility for my own life’
  • ‘Im saying ‘no’ to things I don’t want to do’
  • ‘I’m focusing on my strengths and not my weaknesses’
  • ‘I’m not comparing myself to others’
  • ‘Ive had some sleep’
  • ‘I’m calm, relaxed and feel balanced somehow’
What do you need to do to get you into that place?
ACTION: Pick one thing that you know makes you feel at your best self and take one action step towards it today.

As I knew I would be writing about this topic today I’ve been questioning myself around it.. What is my ultimate best self? I saw a lady in Marlborough the other day walking up a beautifully quiet hill towards her car that encapsulated it for me.  Over her shoulder she had a loosely woven bag with a stunning floral bouquet in it and in her hand she was clutching what looked like a little gift bag, something she had treated herself to, or perhaps a gift for someone.  In those few moments of seeing her I thought she conjured up the word ‘carefree’ and it struck me that that’s when I’m at my best self; when I feel carefree.

What qualities do you see in others that you would like to see in yourself?

I LOVE seeing people really clear about what they want to do in life.  That desire to go out there and live life to the full. Being in tune with your passions and values is key.  It’s a great way to help you understand yourself, why you think/behave the way you do, and can act as a really powerful guide. Within an hour you could get some real lightbulb moments and have more direction than you’ve ever had before. Work out yours, it will be SO worth it. Not sure how, get in touch.

One area that stops people from being their best self is that nagging voice that says, ‘You’re not good enough’.  Let me tell you right here, right now, that you absolutely are good enough.

It’s so important to get to know yourself, who you are and all that you stand for.

Be YOU.  You’re perfect as you are. Play to your strengths. Go out there and ‘Rock what ya got’!!!

It’s All About Values

Do you know what you’re really all about?

If you had to sum up the essence of you, what key words would you use?

Exploring values for me is the most exciting part of Coaching and it brings the biggest breakthroughs.  In Coaching we do an exercise called Values Elicitation where we find out what’s really important to you in life.  This isn’t just a fun tool, it provides so much valuable information to live your life by,  it acts as a compass to guide and direct your life.  Values define who we are, they help us work out what our purpose is.  When you’re out of sync with your values life doesn’t feel quite right somehow.  The core is at the heart of an apple, in the same way our values are at the heart of us.

Take my top 3 values for instance, Love, Connection & Peace.  (When I mentioned this on my Facebook business page this week I said I sound like a hippie!)  For me to be a happy, contented version of me I have to have these things in my life.  By understanding that I can then start to see areas of my life in the past where I wasn’t congruent with my values, which then brought conflict.  Take ‘Connection’ as an example, I’m an only child so am quite content in my own company, but I have to connect with people on a daily basis or I feel all out of sorts.  Whether I’m connecting by phone, online or in person doesn’t matter, it’s about connecting.  Let’s look at ‘Connection’  in turn to see how it all fits together…

  • Work – I need to work in a role that involves contact with people in order to stay connected
  • Relationships – I need to be in a relationship and have a strong connection with my partner (My ‘Love’ value also applies here).  I need a handful of really close friends that I can connect with
  • Communication – I need to feel connected, to have a ‘connection’ with people that I interact with.  I need to hear and be heard

Can you see how it really knocks on across all of the areas?

Another big value of mine is authenticity – we’ll leave that topic for another day though!

Companies write about their core business values, so why don’t we?  Why aren’t we using values as our driving force?  They help us with our decision making, by knowing them we can make decisions based on whether they are in alignment with our core values. Steve Jobs talks about values here.

If you want to read more about my thoughts on core values in business then read my ICN Article here (pg 73)

I know back in my HR days I was very stressed around the time I was making lots of redundancies.  Now anyone that has had to do this knows it is not an easy process to go through and stress is probably a given in a lot of cases (I’ve also been on the receiving end so know some of the emotions/feelings that come up with it)  I now see how going through that process was in complete conflict with some of my core values, no wonder I felt extra uncomfortable.  How was that process helping me with my top 3, love, connection and peace?

So what about now?  Well I’m out there spreading the love, connecting with loads of people and I’m more and more at peace (that’s an ongoing project for me!)  I think I’ve finally found my true purpose in life (and it even matches my values!)

Do you know your core values?  Want to learn more about them and how they can guide you?  Book a session with me and we can piece everything together so that you live your life on purpose, in line with what you need to be you.
