Are you ready to quit? Before you do I want you to think about all of those entrepreneurs out there that said their biggest successes came right after the time they were going to quit, but they decided to give it their all, throwing everything into it to make it succeed.

How do you know when to quit?

It’s a tough one. I’ve heard of a couple of people this week that are giving up their businesses. Giving up is a big decision and it absolutely might be the right decision for you. You may choose to just coach a handful of clients while working part-time or full-time or you may decide that being a business owner isn’t for you. All options are fine, but just check in with yourself that you won’t look back on it with regret. Know that you’ve done all you can, and even more, to make your business work. If you’re honest with yourself you’ll know, deep down you’ll know if this is what you’re cut out for.

How important is it for you to succeed?

To find another way, a better way of building your business? Be really, really honest about this. If it’s one of those iffy, ‘well I’m not bothered then that’s ok, acknowledge that and decide what it is you do want to do. If it’s an, ‘I am ABSOLUTELY going to make this work – it’s my dream – I know I can do it’ then think about what needs to change. If it’s not working now, why not? What could you do differently? It may be a case of learning something new, talking with other like minded people to generate different ideas, or having some coaching. Figure out what’s not working and do something else, something new or revisit something that has worked in the past.

Sometimes we need to invest in our business to take it up to the next level, we don’t know what we don’t know

Sometimes we need to check whether it’s not business but the fear of putting ourselves out there that’s holding us back from being all we can be and creating that freedom and flexibility that we so desire. Sometimes it’s just no longer what we want. Dreams, desires and goals can change, that’s ok. Far better to acknowledge that early on than to keep going on something we ultimately don’t want.

What if that’s where you’re at right now?

You might be asking yourself, but what if I fail? I’d like to challenge you on that.

What if you’re already on the path to success?

What if just around the corner is the success that you’re looking for.

Your action for this week: Write down all of the things that are working and those that aren’t and then pull together an action plan to move you forward. It might be buying the local newspaper to look for jobs or it might be pulling together an exciting new plan for growing your business. What’s next for you?

Success comes through taking consistent steps, the necessary steps required

It takes guts, time and energy. If you’ve got that and want success then go all out.

I’d love to know your thoughts, share in the comments below.

Why You Should Invest In Your Business Now

When we coach we know we can help people get results. We can get so busy coaching though that we forget that we, too, need to keep developing ourselves.

As coaches, it’s always a good idea to continuously develop your skills, through reading blog posts, listening to webinars, reading books etc. We all know this.

There will come a point when it’s time to invest in yourself, not just by listening to yet another recording but working with someone on a 121 basis, or in a group coaching programme, to let the magic happen.

Sometimes we can hit a plateau. We know we want to do something different, we might feel bored and/or frustrated. Something’s missing but we can’t figure out on our own what it is, or we’re just stuck. We wonder how we have all of this coaching knowledge ourselves, the ability to help others change, yet can’t figure out our next move. What’s that all about?

I’ve spent time and money investing in myself this year. I’ve got two mentors and two coaches, all in different areas and I’m also on the lookout for another coach. Why so much? I knew it was time to invest in myself so that I can move my business forward.

It would have been easy for me to say that there are other things I should be spending my money on, both in business or life, but I take my business seriously. Just because you’re a coach doesn’t mean you have to have all of the answers for you!

I see coaches struggling because they won’t get help, especially on the business side. They waste hours on end trying to figure it all out themselves. They have a gazillion ideas from all they’ve listened to, watched, read and all that’s done is stopped them in their tracks where they have no idea where to start.

You can do it on your own, but at what cost and how long will it take? What amount of time, money and energy are you willing to lose before you realise it’s OK,  more than that – it’s necessary, to seek support.

Whether you’re stuck with a problem where you need to get a kick up the butt or you want to work on a bigger area of your business I can help. If not me then get support from someone that is the right fit for you.  As you start to invest in you, your business will grow, and you will keep that continued passion for your business.

Do you want a good business or a great business? I know way back I’d have replied, ‘just any business will do, please’!

Seriously though, if you have the opportunity to grow your business instead of sitting there wondering how you can get your business off the ground then grab it with both hands.

Let me know in the comments below what you’ve done this year to invest in your business.

How Running Your Own Business Is Like Trying To Lose Weight

You may recall a post a while back where I talked about the fact that I wanted to lose a bit of weight. All of this sitting behind a computer has resulted in weight gain and it got to the point that I needed to do something about it. I’ve messed around with it now for about 6 months and finally came to an a-ha moment last week. You’ll probably recognise this in your clients and you too.

Running Biz-Losing Weight

We set goals, whether they are personal or business/work and endeavour to go all out to get them. After a while the allure of the end goal wears off. We realise we have to put the work in to make those goals happen and the goal loses its appeal.

When we talk about weight loss we talk about willpower. I don’t think it’s just about willpower at all, I think it’s about willingness.

My a-ha moment was simple. I wanted the weight loss, but I wasn’t willing enough to put the effort in. Truthfully, I was tired of having yet another goal that I was setting myself to achieve.  I’d viewed it as another thing to do on my to-do list instead of making it fun to take better care of myself. Half-heartedly working on it wasn’t working, something needed to change.

Want vs willing

I could sit there each week wanting and resolving to do better but unless I was willing to put the effort in nothing would change.

The same theory relates to business. I speak to coaches on a daily basis and you can tell the ones that are willing to put the effort in to make their businesses work and those that aren’t.

The sad truth is that a lot of coaches don’t make it in business. It’s not because they aren’t amazing coaches. They set out with the best intentions, but they aren’t willing to go all out to build their businesses. They aren’t always willing to compromise on some things to make their goal happen. They aren’t willing to put in the time, energy and effort to make it happen. They aren’t willing to invest in themselves to move their businesses forward quickly so they stay stuck for a long time, making little or no progress.

Building a business takes time. There used to be a phrase that if you were still in business at 2 years you’d probably make it. When you hit 3 years then you should find that things are then ticking over nicely. If we use that as a guide are you willing to commit 2 years initially to building your business?

I had a client once tell me that I put others to shame where I was always doing something on my business. I make no apologies for that. When I get a goal I go all out on it to make it happen, that’s my style. I want to know that I have given everything in life my 100% commitment and best shot. That includes my fabulous business (and my weight!)

So if you’re telling yourself you want to run a coaching business answer this question – How willing are you to make that happen? Let me know in the comments below.

(Ps – I’m sure I’ll get asked if I don’t say this… Yes, I’m now willing to do something about my weight and I am taking action!)
