For those of you following me on Periscope (the new live streaming social media thing that’s trending) you may know that I tried to run a scope on this subject yesterday but it didn’t quite happen! I couldn’t see if anybody was online so thought I was talking to myself. It all felt a bit awkward so I thought I’d end the scope.
Anyway, I thought I’d create a little video for you on how to generate some creative content as, I don’t know about you, it’s something I think about a lot. How can I keep it interesting? What do my ideal clients want / need to know?
Here’s a quick overview of the top tips if you just don’t have time to watch the video.
Do something completely different.
Walk away from whatever it is you’re trying to generate ideas for. I make hand- made cards and used to be on quite a few design teams to showcase card making products / ideas. If I got stuck on a design I would stomp (I mean walk of course) saying nothing was coming up for me. Going back to the same project later I’d had lots of new ideas. Ok, so some I’d start again, but ultimately the design would always be better in the long run.
So give your brain a break, go for a walk, take a bath, watch some funnies on Facebook, phone a friend to debate world issues, whatever it is you need to do to get your spark back. We know that our best ideas are often when we’re taking a shower or doing the dishes, when we’re sitting on a beach reading a novel! Why? Because our brain needs that restful activity. Read this post if you really have writers’ block!
Keep a notebook with you
Any excuse for a notebook (like you need an excuse for a notebook – really?!!) Your creative muse might strike at any moment, capture those creative ideas as quickly as you can. You might be looking in a department store and see something that inspires a post. It could be that you see a group of people doing something that triggers an idea, the side of a parked van with a logo that inspires. You need to capture those thoughts. (ps – driving while writing is dangerous so please pull over!)
Read a lot and learn from others
Allow yourself a certain period of time to absorb information. I’m not saying copy but sometimes just reading someone’s take on something can trigger lots of new sparks of creativity. It might be reading something business related or something completely non-related.
If all else fails try a hypnotherapy track. If you watch the video you’ll find out what I mean by that one! Oh yeah, and I shared my new addiction to washi tape. Washi tape and notebooks – a match made in heaven – aaah

I agree with all that. I swear by the Wii or Playstation for giving my subconscious time to bring up answers for me. I suppose your way is a bit more ‘grown up’!
Good post
Ruby – Great post! I carry a note book as well in my purse. When I don’t have my notebook I will use my cell phone and type in my inspirations or ideas in the Notes app. Love your color tabs on the notebook.

I agree Patti, the Notes app is fab when you don’t have your notebook. What would we do without our phones nowadays?!

Love this and love notebooks but never seem to carry them around with me!!! I need to do this more often as I get inspired by things but never write it down.
