Today I’m going to share how speed dating can be used in coaching with my 3 Steps To Speed Coaching. I’ve never been speed dating but my understanding is that you have a short conversation with a prospective partner to get to know a little about them and then you move onto the next person. Now speed coaching was something I heard about a while ago and I was intrigued so I had a look around for some more information. There’s not much out there. Anyway, a very lovely coaching friend, Brett Chitty, agreed to talk to me about it and we co-speed coached (ok not a proper phrase but you know what I mean!!) It’s basically a short conversation you have with a ‘client’ where you coach them before moving onto the next person. I LOVE this idea, I think it’s great! Anyway, having now been speed coached myself this is what I took away from it and how I use it.
(Now please note that I like to (as my husband says) ‘Ruby’ things so I don’t always do the official version of stuff. If you want the real deal then you might want to research it yourself!)
Here are my 3 Steps To Speed Coaching
1. Find out the goal – What would you like to work on in this (mini) session? (they will need to give you a very quick snapshot of the problem/goal)
2. Now explore their past, present and future – see below
Past: What have you done so far to (achieve your outcome/solve your problem)?
Present: What impact is it having on your life right now?
Future: How would you like things to be instead?
3. Close by asking them what one small step they could take to move them nearer to their goal
Ta-da – you’re done!
Now when would you use this?
One way I’ve found it useful is when someone doesn’t understand what coaching is. This is a great way for them to get some clarity very quickly. You can do this in 5-10 minutes if you really keep the focus. They recognise what steps they have/haven’t taken, they understand the impact it’s having and then imagine the way they’d like things to be instead. You then help them with one action step. Think networking events as an example of one way you can show what you do without giving away all of your knowledge and experience for free!
What about when working with employees and you need to coach really quickly and effectively?
It could also be expanded for a discovery session, but that’s probably best for a blog post for another day!
So go out there and have a play. I would LOVE to know how it goes for you. Please come back and share your experience with me in the comments below or let me know over on my Facebook page.
